From Hwy 101 take Hwy 58 towards Bakersfield. It started with hard twists, evened out to a straight, boring and SUPER fast stretch then took you over a mountain range that was the pinnacle of what we look for to ride: lots of gear shifts, hard accelerations and even harder braking.
I stayed the night in Mojave and got up early to ride on to Vegas. I expected to be bored but was struck instead by the beauty of the ride through the mountainous area. It had rained, the clouds were sparse and the morning sun was poking through with rays that lit up the desert floor. The Joshua trees were beautiful and sparkly and the ground was covered with green desert plants. Beautiful and peaceful.
It was also fun because it was FAST. I passed two cops after I had slowed to 90 and I swear they didn't even give me a second glance.
